Lewistown, MT is home to the Big Springs Trout Hatchery, the largest coldwater production hatchery in Montana. Capable of producing up to two million fish annually weighing 160,000 pounds, these fish are planted in about 100 different waters throughout the state. Big Spring Creek is a rare body of water. The origin which is about 20 miles away is a constant flow spring, ideal for natural fish reproduction. Fly-fishing enthusiasts travel to Lewistown from across the nation to fish the Big Spring Creek. The habitat in the area is ideal for mule deer, whitetail deer, pheasants, sharptails, hens, and occasional elk, bear, and turkey. The meadows, brush and scattered timber provide good cover for an for an abundance of wildlife.
